It’s almost Halloween, which is easily one of my favorite times of the year. I like any opportunity to see people bring to life their favorite video game characters. We spend a lot of time building relationships and interacting with these fictional characters that in some ways they can almost feel like old friends.
As a few of you may know, I have spent the last year and a half working on Adera, an adventure game developed by Hitpoint Studios and published by Microsoft Studios. This is the first project I have worked on at this scale. With a total of 5 episodes for the first season, it meant countless hours editing voice-overs, playtesting, and a ton of sound design.
All of this could have been grueling, however we were fortunate to work with some extremely talented and often hilarious voice actors that imbued our characters with a personality of their own. The protagonist Jane was voiced by none other than Ali Hillis (Final Fantasy, Mass Effect). Ali was an extreme pleasure to work with and gave Jane a smart, wry sense of humor at the same time never failing to express Jane’s drive, curiosity, and pathos.
We also worked with Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Amazing Spider-Man) who was one of our supporting actors. Sam was a lot of fun to work with, and quite literally had me laughing out loud whenever he improvised outtakes. Unfortunately the game wasn’t developed to be an outright comedy, otherwise we would have used much more of his comedic gold! It turns out Sam and Ali are old friends, and while we didn’t get a chance to record them at the same time, I still think think they established a good rapport.
Naturally, I wanted to see Jane’s character in real life. With the help of our friend Michelle Mink, quite a bit of scouring the internet and thrift shops for the costume, and Samantha Gribble’s makeup and hair mastery, we were able to put together this great cosplay look. It was uncanny to see this character that I have been working with for over a year in the flesh. It was truly a lot of fun! I’d like to think that this is what Adera would look like on Xbox One. Are you feeling me Microsoft?
I had an amazing time working on Adera, and I am thankful to have been a part of this tiny slice of video game history. Hopefully I will continue to work with other great characters and make them come alive! What characters will you bring to life this Halloween?
I also added a video “sizzle” reel for Adera if you are unfamiliar with the game, but check it out if you have a Surface or Windows 8! We just released the Windows 8.1 update!
