Happy Video Game-o-ween!

Jane Sinclaire - Adera

It’s almost Halloween, which is easily one of my favorite times of the year. I like any opportunity to see people bring to life their favorite video game characters. We spend a lot of time building relationships and interacting with these fictional characters that in some ways they can almost feel like old friends.

Jane Sinclaire - Adera

As a few of you may know, I have spent the last year and a half working on Adera, an adventure game developed by Hitpoint Studios and published by Microsoft Studios. This is the first project I have worked on at this scale. With a total of 5 episodes for the first season, it meant countless hours editing voice-overs, playtesting, and a ton of sound design.

Jane Sinclaire - Adera

All of this could have been grueling, however we were fortunate to work with some extremely talented and often hilarious voice actors that imbued our characters with a personality of their own. The protagonist Jane was voiced by none other than Ali Hillis (Final Fantasy, Mass Effect). Ali was an extreme pleasure to work with and gave Jane a smart, wry sense of humor at the same time never failing to express Jane’s drive, curiosity, and pathos.

Jane Sinclaire - Adera

We also worked with Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Amazing Spider-Man) who was one of our supporting actors. Sam was a lot of fun to work with, and quite literally had me laughing out loud whenever he improvised outtakes. Unfortunately the game wasn’t developed to be an outright comedy, otherwise we would have used much more of his comedic gold! It turns out Sam and Ali are old friends, and while we didn’t get a chance to record them at the same time, I still think think they established a good rapport.

Jane Sinclaire - Adera

Naturally, I wanted to see Jane’s character in real life. With the help of our friend Michelle Mink, quite a bit of scouring the internet and thrift shops for the costume, and Samantha Gribble’s makeup and hair mastery, we were able to put together this great cosplay look. It was uncanny to see this character that I have been working with for over a year in the flesh. It was truly a lot of fun! I’d like to think that this is what Adera would look like on Xbox One. Are you feeling me Microsoft?

I had an amazing time working on Adera, and I am thankful to have been a part of this tiny slice of video game history. Hopefully I will continue to work with other great characters and make them come alive! What characters will you bring to life this Halloween?

I also added a video “sizzle” reel for Adera if you are unfamiliar with the game, but check it out if you have a Surface or Windows 8! We just released the Windows 8.1 update!

If you can’t get enough Adera, be sure to read the book by R.H. Stavis. You can find it on Barnes & Noble or Amazon

ICOM – the real world

Here is today’s screencast of my Ironchef of Music submission. I tried making today’s chef a bit funky. Perhaps I’ll come back to this melody and fix it up a bit one day. You can find the source sample on the ICOM site. Info on the source sample:

Another World, also known as Out of This World in North America and Outer World (アウターワールド) in Japan, is a 1991 cinematic platformer action-adventure game designed by Eric Chahi for Delphine Software. The game tells a story of Lester, a young scientist who, as a result of an experiment gone wrong, finds himself in a dangerous alien world where he is forced to fight for his survival.
Originally developed on an Amiga for the Amiga, Atari ST, Apple IIGS and DOS platforms, the game was widely ported to other contemporary systems. Later efforts resulted in several game engine recreations for the game that permitted it to run on modern computers, consoles and mobile phones. In 2006, Chahi independently released a 15th Anniversary Edition for Windows which allowed the game to be played on modern computers with original or enhanced visuals; following up in 2011 for its 20th anniversary, ports of the game were prepared for iOS and Android based devices.
Another World was highly innovative in its use of cinematic effects in the graphics and cutscenes, which granted the game a praise amongst critics and a commercial success. It also influenced a number of other video games and designers.

Ironchef of Music – Ear Conundrum

  • June 23, 2013

icom 6-23-2013 ipa-Ear Conundrum from ipaghost on Vimeo.

Welcome back to another ICOM! It’s been a while since our last one, but hopefully these will pick up over the summer. Today’s mystery sample comes from a mystery zither found in Protman’s new apartment. It was left in the kitchen drawer by the old tenant. Now you can hear it in ways they probably never have imagined! I’m pretty happy with the melody of my submission, however the mix is very muddy on the low end from mixing with poor quality ear-buds.  Have any suggestions on headphones that are great to mix with? Let me know in the comment section!

You can find the source sample, and other submissions on the fancy new ICOM site!

NAHA 2013

NAHA 2013

Hair and makeup artist Samantha Gribble submitted these images to this year’s NAHA competition. Unfortunately they did not make it to the finals, however we had a lot of fun working on these images, and look forward to next year’s event! Our models where BrizieRainbow Ice, and Chiara. Shooting these pieces took a lot patience for the models, so we were very thankful for their hard work! Samantha put a lot of effort into the hair color and styling, but she also spent a lot of time researching butterfly mounting. Yes, those butterflies are real! They came from all over the world, one from Peru caught in the early 1990s. Coincidentally I too was also in Peru around the same time, but I don’t remember seeing that butterfly, go figure. We also used a beautiful latex collar from Lacing Lilith which was adorned with latex flowers. This collar is now for sale if you are interested. Finally we had the images retouched by the talented Dolce Retouch, who did an excellent job making the makeup and models look flawless! Regardless of the NAHA outcome, I personally think Samantha is a winner for constantly creating new and breathtaking styles!

Sarah Church is an up and coming fashion designer who recently was a resident at Chicago’s Fashion Incubator. She let us shoot some of her brand new dresses, which looked fantastic on our models! You might recognize Unique Love and Michelle Mink who modeled for us again. Also modeling for us was Christiana. Hair and makeup was by Samantha Gribble with the help of Amber Farhat as makeup assistant. We shot at Studio 311 which was run by photographer Paul M Weltlich. Paul also brought his adorable kitten Pixel, who we all agree was the star of the show!
